Winnie-the-Pooh was named after a Canadian black bear who was purchased by Lt. Colebourn in 1914, as the soldier left his hometown of Winnipeg to fight in the First World War. A.A. Milne and his son Christopher Robin were regular visitors to the zoo around this time and became fond of ‘Winnie’ the bear, inspiring the now world-famous stories.
